KUNJIANG VILLAGE

Kunjiang Village is a historic village in Chaoan (Teo Ann 潮安) district, Guangdong, founded around 1333 by our ancestor Zheng Dongli, respectfully known as Dongli Gong. Over the centuries, the village grew as generations of descendants expanded the community. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as China faced turbulent times, many villagers left in search of refuge and opportunity abroad. A significant number settled in Southeast Asia, often using Singapore as their initial destination before moving to other countries. Recognizing their shared heritage, a group of entrepreneurs established the Khoon Kang Lian Ngee Sia association in Singapore to strengthen ties among overseas descendants. This organization has played a vital role in helping them reconnect with their ancestral hometown and preserve their cultural heritage.

CHAOAN, GUANGDONG

Kunjiang Village is located in the Chaoan district of Guangdong. This district, together with several others, has been an area populated by the Teochew people. Overseas Chinese from eight of these districts consider themselves to be "gaginang" (自己人, 家己人). That is why in Singapore, there is an association called the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan (新加坡潮州八邑会馆). The eight districts (八邑) are Chaoan, Chenghai, Chaoyang, Jieyang, Raoping, Puning, Huilai, and Nanao. Another association specific to the Chaoan district is the Teo Ann Huay Kuan (潮安会馆). Khoon Kang Lian Ngee Sia is now part of the Teo Ann Huay Kuan.
